Early Life and Education
Charlie Strong was born on August 2, 1960, in Batesville, Arkansas. He grew up in a small town where he developed a love for football at a young age. Strong attended the University of Central Arkansas, where he played football as a linebacker. After graduating, he went on to earn a master’s degree from the University of Florida.
Coaching Career
Strong began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Florida under head coach Galen Hall. He then went on to coach at various colleges and universities, including Southern Illinois, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, South Carolina, and Louisville.
In 2010, Strong was hired as the head coach of the University of Louisville football team. During his time there, he led the Cardinals to a 37-15 record and two bowl victories. His success at Louisville caught the attention of the University of Texas, where he was hired as the head coach in 2014.
At Texas, Strong faced challenges but also made significant improvements to the program. He finished his tenure with a record of 16-21 before being let go by the university in 2016. Strong then went on to coach at the University of South Florida before being hired as the head coach at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2020.
