Chia Youyee Vang was born on June 5, 1971, in Laos. She grew up in a small village in Laos before her family immigrated to the United States when she was a child. Despite facing numerous challenges as a refugee, Vang was determined to pursue her education. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley, and went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
