Colleen Wakako Hanabusa was born on May 4, 1951, in Waianae, Hawaii, to Isao and June Hanabusa. Growing up in Hawaii, Hanabusa was instilled with a deep sense of community and a strong work ethic from her parents. She attended St. Andrew’s Priory School before going on to earn her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. She then pursued her law degree from the William S. Richardson School of Law, where she honed her skills as a legal advocate.

After graduating from law school, Hanabusa began her career as an attorney, specializing in labor law and advocating for workers’ rights.
