Early Life and Education
Daniel Cnossen was born on May 17, 1980, in Topeka, Kansas. He attended Shawnee Heights High School and went on to graduate from the United States Naval Academy. After serving as a Navy SEAL, Cnossen continued his education at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and Harvard Divinity School.
Military Service
Cnossen’s military career began when he enlisted in the United States Navy in 2002. He completed SEAL training and was deployed to Afghanistan in 2009. In 2009, while serving in Kandahar Province, Cnossen was severely injured by an improvised explosive device (IED) that resulted in the loss of both of his legs.
Awards and Recognition
Despite his injuries, Cnossen’s dedication to his country did not go unnoticed. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his bravery and service in Afghanistan. He also received the Purple Heart for the injuries he sustained during combat.
Athletic Achievements
After undergoing rehabilitation and learning how to walk again with prosthetic legs, Cnossen discovered a new passion for adaptive sports. He excelled in cross-country skiing and biathlon, eventually becoming a member of the U.S. Paralympic Nordic Ski Team.
Paralympic Success
Cnossen made his Paralympic debut at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia. He won a silver medal in the men’s 12.5km sitting biathlon event. At the 2018 Winter Paralympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, Cnossen had a breakthrough performance, winning six medals, including three golds.
