Early Life and Education
Daniel DiNardo was born on May 23, 1949, in Steubenville, Ohio. He grew up in a devout Catholic family and was deeply influenced by his parents’ faith. From a young age, DiNardo felt called to serve the Church and pursued his education accordingly.
He attended Theological College in Washington, D.C., where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. He then went on to study at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he received a Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree. DiNardo continued his education at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in Philosophy. He completed his academic journey at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Systematic Theology.
Ordination and Early Ministry
After completing his studies, Daniel DiNardo was ordained to the priesthood on July 16, 1977. He began his ministry as a parish priest in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, where he served for several years. During this time, DiNardo became known for his compassionate pastoral care and strong leadership skills.
In 1997, DiNardo was appointed as an Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C. He served in this role for five years before being named Bishop of Sioux City, Iowa, in 2000. In 2004, DiNardo was appointed as Coadjutor Bishop of Galveston-Houston, Texas, and became the Archbishop of Galveston-Houston the following year.
Leadership in the Catholic Church
As Archbishop of Galveston-Houston, Daniel DiNardo oversaw one of the largest and most diverse dioceses in the United States. He worked tirelessly to promote unity and collaboration among the clergy and laity, and to strengthen the Church’s presence in the community.
In 2007, DiNardo was elected as Vice President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and served in this role until 2010.
