Early Life and Education
Eric D. Green was born on December 10, 1959, in St. Louis, Missouri, to Maurice Green and his wife. Growing up in a family that valued education and hard work, Eric showed an early interest in science and research. He attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison for his undergraduate studies, where he majored in bacteriology.
After completing his undergraduate degree, Green went on to pursue a Ph.D. in cell biology at Washington University in St. Louis. He then completed his medical degree at Washington University School of Medicine, where he developed a passion for genetics and genomics.

After completing his medical training, Eric D. Green began his career as a physician-scientist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He worked in various roles at the NIH, including serving as the Director of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) from 2009 to 2021.
