Early Life and Education
Gustav Suits was born on November 30, 1883, in Võnnu, a small town near Tartu, Estonia. He was the son of Liis and Hindrik Suits. Suits’ parents were farmers, and he grew up in a rural environment. Despite his humble beginnings, Suits showed an early interest in literature and poetry.
After completing his primary education in Võnnu, Suits moved to Tartu to attend the Hugo Treffner Gymnasium, a prestigious school known for its focus on the humanities. It was during his time at the gymnasium that Suits began to develop his poetic talents and gain recognition for his work.
Early Career and Literary Success
After graduating from the gymnasium, Suits went on to study law at the University of Tartu. However, his true passion lay in poetry, and he soon became involved in the vibrant literary scene of Tartu. In 1905, he co-founded the literary group Noor-Eesti (Young Estonia), which aimed to promote modernism and cultural renewal in Estonian literature.

Political Activism and Exile
Throughout his career, Suits was also actively involved in politics. He was a staunch advocate for Estonian independence and cultural autonomy. In 1917, he played a key role in the Estonian Declaration of Independence, which established Estonia as a sovereign nation.
However, Estonia’s independence was short-lived. In 1940, the country was occupied by the Soviet Union as part of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Suits, who had been a vocal critic of Soviet rule, was forced to flee his homeland and go into exile. He settled in Stockholm, Sweden, where he lived out the rest of his days.
Literary Legacy
Despite living in exile, Suits continued to write poetry and contribute to Estonian literature. His later works reflected his experiences of displacement and longing for his homeland. Suits’ poems were characterized by their profound sense of loss and nostalgia, as well as their enduring hope for a free and independent Estonia.

Personal Life
Suits was married to Helmi Kõiv (Helmi Kangro) with whom he had two daughters: Helga Kangro and Maret Suits. Despite the challenges of exile and political persecution, Suits remained devoted to his family and continued to support them throughout his life.
Death and Legacy
Gustav Suits passed away on May 23, 1956, in Stockholm, Sweden. He was laid to rest at Skogskyrkogården, a famous cemetery in Stockholm. Despite his untimely death, Suits’ legacy lives on through his poetry and contributions to Estonian literature.
