Early Life and Education
Forbes Burnham was born on February 20, 1923, in Kitty, Georgetown, British Guiana (now Guyana). He was the son of Edward Burnham, a civil servant, and Rachel Abigail Fraser. Burnham attended Queen’s College in Guyana before going on to study law at the London School of Economics and Political Science. It was during his time in London that Burnham became involved in politics and began to develop his vision for the future of Guyana.
Rise to Power
After returning to Guyana, Burnham quickly rose through the ranks of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), eventually becoming its leader in 1955. However, Burnham soon became disillusioned with the party’s leadership and policies and broke away to form the People’s National Congress (PNC) in 1957. The PNC quickly gained popularity among the Afro-Guyanese population, and Burnham was elected Prime Minister in 1964.
