Early Life and Education

Richard Mastracchio was born on February 11, 1960, in Waterbury, Connecticut. From a young age, he had a fascination with space and aviation, which ultimately led him to pursue a career as an astronaut. Mastracchio attended Crosby High School in Waterbury before going on to study at the University of Connecticut, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. He later obtained a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Professional Career

After completing his education, Mastracchio began working at Hamilton Standard in Connecticut, where he was involved in the development of life support systems for NASA’s Space Shuttle program. In 1996, he was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA and went on to complete his training at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

Space Missions

Throughout his career, Mastracchio has participated in several space missions, including STS-106, STS-118, STS-131, and Expedition 38/39. During these missions, he conducted a variety of experiments and tasks related to space exploration and research. Mastracchio has spent a total of 228 days in space and has completed 9 spacewalks.
