Early Life and Education
Ernesto Samper was born on August 3, 1950, in Bogota, Colombia. He grew up in a politically active family, with his brother Daniel Samper Pizano also becoming a prominent figure in Colombian politics and journalism. Samper attended the Pontifical Xavierian University in Bogota, where he studied economics and political science.
Political Career
Samper’s political career began in the 1970s when he joined the Liberal Party of Colombia. He quickly rose through the ranks, serving as Minister of Economic Development and Minister of Health under President Belisario Betancur. In 1994, Samper was elected President of Colombia, serving from 1994 to 1998.
Presidency
During his time as President, Samper faced numerous challenges, including accusations of accepting drug money from the Cali Cartel to fund his election campaign. Despite these allegations, Samper maintained his innocence and was never convicted of any crimes. His presidency was marked by efforts to promote peace and economic development in Colombia.
